With the government coming down on fleets through CSA, you cannot afford to be penalized for a poor tire maintenance program. Since tires are the second highest category for vehicle citations following brakes, it is imperative that fleets maintain their tires in a more efficient manner. With our certified professional technicians, what better way than to allow Shrader Tire & Oil help manage and maintain your fleet's tires.
Scheduled yard checks are one of the service offerings we provide at Shrader Tire & Oil. A Shrader certified tire technician will come inspect the vehicles listed in your program. We can then set parameters and achievement goals for the tires by position or application. Tires that meet those goals can then be either retreaded or swapped for new tires. Tires that wear or fail prematurely are analyzed to determine the root cause of the problem so it may be corrected, allowing you to run more efficiently.
Determining the proper tires to run for your specific application is paramount to keeping your fleet rolling. There are around 14 million miles of roads worldwide and we’ve got the right tires for every one of them. But no two roads are the same and no two manufacturers are the same; this is why Shrader carries many of the top commercial truck and RV tires, including Michelin and Continental. From Long Haul Steers to Michelin X-One Retreads, we have the inventory and the expert knowledge to identify the correct tires by axle for your fleet. We realize that tires are a sizeable investment for your company so Shrader offers programs to help you achieve the lowest cost-per-mile. Ultimately, cost effectiveness is what matters. For those traveling out west, we also have SmartWay verified tires.
It is important for drivers to make pre-trip inspections before leaving for their routes. Drivers should look for nail holes, gouging, coupling, excessive wear, and sidewall damage on the vehicle’s tires. By making these preventative steps, you are greatly reducing the chance of premature tire failure. Regular inspections can help avoid unexpected blow-outs and eliminate the cost of road service or having to call a wrecker. It can also lessen the impact on the environment by not having to replace and scrap tires as often.
Having proper vehicle alignment ensures you’re getting the most of your tire investment. Alignment affects handling, steering, stability, tire performance, and driver comfort. Have alignment checks periodically as specified by the vehicle owner’s manual or whenever you or your driver indicate the truck is pulling or tracking. Learn more about Beeline Alignments.
Keep an eye on the condition of your tire mounting hardware. Be sure that lug nuts are not rusted or rounded over, and tire valves are not cracked and are free from debris. Balancing is important for making sure the weight is evenly distributed around the axle. Unbalanced tires can put uneven pressure or heat on the treads causing uneven wear. Unbalanced tires can also strain the wheel bearings and suspension components through tire wobble.
Both over and under-inflated tires can lead to premature failure. Always refer to tire or vehicle manufacturer specs on proper inflation pressure. Over inflated tires are more susceptible to road hazard damage and lead to vehicle handling issues. Under inflated tires create excessive heat and stress which breaks down the tire faster and can lead to failure.
Most fleets store their scrap tires somewhere behind the maintenance shop until the pile begins to take over the yard. A good scrap tire analysis program can eliminate that pile from taking over and help you avoid past mistakes which can result in reducing future tire costs. Consider what these scrap tires may tell you with their tread depth, number of retreads, irregular tread wear, brake skids and sidewall curb damage. Also consider the tire brand and tread designs that work for your applications. Determining what the stories are behind these issues can be a challenge for even the most seasoned tire professionals. Allow Shrader to inspect your fleet’s tires to determine critical issues in your fleet’s maintenance.
Retreading tires is a great way to stretch maintenance dollars as new tires can be very costly. Retreading tires is also a good way to be environmentally conscious because, in some cases, retreading can be done several times to a single tire. Shrader Tire & Oil is a certified Michelin “MRT” Retreader operating a state-of-the-art Michelin Retread plant in Melvindale, Michigan. Learn more about recapping tires with Shrader.
