Diesel Engine OEMs Announce Specs for API CK-4 and FA-4 Oils

The major diesel engine and truck manufacturers have recently provided their own OEM specifications that connect with the new API CK-4 and FA-4 categories for their new model GHG ’17 diesel engines. Some have started providing initial guidance for backward compatibility of the new products for their older EPA model diesel engines. Volvo and Cummins announced support for longer oil drain intervals with their new upgraded OEM specification requirements.

CUMMINS - APPROVED

API CK-4: Cummins CES 20086

API FA-4: Cummins CES 20087

  • API CK-4 & FA-4 approved for GHG ‘17 Cummins X-15 & X-12 (2018) engines

  • API CK-4 & Cummins CES 20086 specification oils approved for use in older ISX and ISX 15 model engines

  • API FA-4 not authorized for anything but X-15 model engines

  • Cummins announced a 10,000-mile increase in oil drain recommendations (from a maximum 40,000 to 50,000 miles) for new X-15 engines using the new oils

DETROIT DIESEL - APPROVED

API CK-4: DFS 93K222

API FA-4: DFS 93K223

  • Detroit Diesel (Diamler owned) has approved the backwards compatible API CK-4 for older engines in Freightliner & Western Star trucks

  • API FA-4 is approved for new GHG’17 model engines along with EPA 10 and EPA 13 older model diesel engines

  • No announcement has been made on oil drain extensions, but recommends using the new products in new engines

  • Detroit Diesel will factory-fill new model engines with API FA-4 & DFS 93K223 approved oil starting December ’16

PACCAR - APPROVED

API CK-4

API FA-4 (to be announced in future)

  • Kenworth & Peterbilt trucks are installed with either a PACCAR MX or Cummins engine
  • PACCAR uses API designations with no specific OEM specification qualification program included
  • Both engine models are factory filled with Delo 400 XLE Synblend SAE 10W-30 (API CK-4 ready)
  • API FA-4 oils may be used with Cummins X-15 engines, but PACCAR has not commented yet on use of API FA-4 oils for the PACCAR MX GHG 17 or older model engines

Volvo - APPROVED

API CK-4: Volvo VDS 4.5

API CK-4: Mack EOS 4.5

API CK-4: Renault VI RLD 4

API FA-4: No specification and not allowed for use in EITHER new or older Volvo or Mack diesel engines

  • Volvo & Mack (Volvo owned) have new specifications for API CK-4, but do not allow use of API FA-4 oils in their engines
  • Volvo & Mack specifications are built around tighter requirements for improved oil oxidation performance as measured by the new Volvo T13 engine test versus the typical API CK-4 or API FA-4 Volvo T13 requirements
  • Volvo announcing a 10,000-mile oil drain extension (45,000 to 55,000) for engines using the new VDS 4.5 or Mack EOS 4.5 oils

Navistar - APPROVED

API CK-4

API FA-4

  • Navistar uses API designations with no specific OEM specification qualification program included
  • Most Navistar equipment uses Cummins engines, with recommendations being the same as Cummins, including the oil drain extension
  • API CK-4 is recommended for N13 model engine
  • API FA-4 is approved for new model GHG ’17 engines only
  • Navistar will be factory-fill with API CK-4 SAE 10W-30 oil
